Ottawa's SiteCast Construction Corp. has been keeping busy with construction of Carleton Place Colonnade with tilt-up concrete panels that are cast on-site, then tilted into position.
Phase I of the project included 106,000 square feet of tilt-up retail space constructed for retailers including Rona, Staples, the LCBO, TD Canada Trust, Blockbuster Video, Broadway Bar and Grill, and Telus Mobility.
Although Carleton Place, about 50 kilometres outside of Ottawa, has only about 9,000 residents, it averages more than 18,000 vehicles per day. Among the retail projects to take advantage of that steady commuter stream is a 1,650 sq. ft. Starbucks drive-though, the first tilt-up concrete outlet in Ontario for the global coffee retailer.
"We constructed it of 13 insulated, load-bearing concrete panels for the building, which we cast on-site," says Shawn Hickey, vice-president of SiteCast.
Construction of the base building took about eight weeks, with the tilt-up construction portion taking a fraction of the schedule.
