OTTAWA, Canada, June 13, 2013 —Living up to its reputation for pushing the boundaries with concrete tilt-up panels, SiteCast Construction has won this year’s Building of the Year - architectural achievement from the CON/STEEL Alliance. The award, presented at the bi-annual conference held in Baltimore Maryland, recognizes superior construction that also showcases the versatility of using concrete tilt-up construction.
SiteCast won for its work on the new headquarters for Grenville Mutual Insurance, a distinct office building with a facade that fits well into its natural setting in Kemptville Ontario.
The 18,000 square feet building, features a textured exterior wall that resembles a forest. Surrounding panels include accent texture and natural hand set stones to create unique exterior. Additional character was introduced with a traditional metal sloped roof, a large courtyard and chimney.
Tilt-up is a construction technique whereby reinforced concrete panels are cast on-site then tilted into position. To get the forest look, SiteCast cast a select group of concrete tilt up panels over an embossed forest-patterned formliner.
“What you can do with tilt-up is limited only by the Architect’s imagination. We’ve embossed logos, images and now a forest,” said Shawn Hickey, President of SiteCast. “We were thrilled with the vision and challenge that Gerry Shoalts (architect) presented the team and we all became inspired to produce his unique perspective.”
The benefits of SiteCast go well beyond design. These load-bearing insulated structural walls are also chosen for their speed of construction, reduced cost of ownership and energy efficiency. Grenville Mutual was competed in just seven months: on time and under budget.
